March 2022 – Pyrite

The mineral of the month March is pyrite which belongs to the group of sulfides. Pyrite is popular because of its well-formed (euhedral) crystal shapes such as the cube. Due to its colour pyrite may well be mistaken for gold and is therefore also called fool’s gold. It´s not that wrong because pyrite can contain trace amounts of gold, making it economically interesting in some regions.
