New exhibition: Breath of Stone and Bamboo Opening: 8 May, 5.30 pm

Breath of Stone and Bamboo – Dong-Hee KIM (South Korea, Seoul)

My work begins with a small dot.
The dot is the simplest form and, at the same time, the most primordial unit of
being. By placing countless dots on the canvas, I layer
invisible breaths and planes of time upon one another. Each dot bears the trace
of a moment and preserves a fleeting movement.
I paint bamboo forests, yet what I truly wish to depict is the wind
sweeping through the forest, the light that falls upon it, and the sound of
the leaves as they gently brush against one another. From the outside, a
bamboo forest appears calm and upright, yet within it is in constant
motion. Between the leaves and stalks there is a subtle tremor that is barely
visible. I capture this tremor in dots.
The small dots are not simple shapes, but records of
moments in which the light begins to vibrate. The dot is the structure of the wind, the rhythm of the breath and the invisible vibration of the forest.
As I place dots, a forest emerges – and as I draw the forest,
I return once more to the dot. The forest is a community of countless
individual existences, and even a single dot is a world of its own. In this exhibition, the works are presented alongside small stones in a
display case. The stones do not move. They are condensed time,
compact bodies of silence that carry within them the silence of millennia.
The dots on the picture plane, by contrast, are in ceaseless motion.
Every time they receive light, their trembling is reawakened. Whilst the
stone preserves the time that has accumulated, the dot preserves the breath of a
moment.
This exhibition reveals the tension between time standing still and the fleeting
moment, between heaviness and lightness, between matter and
immateriality. The immobile stones and the vibrating dots stand
opposite one another, creating a balance between stillness and movement.
In the darkness, we perceive the light more clearly.
And this light fills the room like a sound.

돌과 대나무의 숨

나의 작업은 작은 점에서 시작된다.
점은 가장 단순한 형태이지만 동시에 존재의 가장 근원적인 단위이기도 하다. 나는 화면 위에
수없이 많은 점을 찍으며 보이지 않는 호흡과 시간의 층을 쌓아간다. 각각의 점은 하나의 순
간이 남긴 흔적이며 스쳐 지나가는 움직임을 담고 있다.
나는 대나무숲을 그리지만 실제로 그리고자 하는 것은 숲을 스치는 바람과 그 위에 드리워진
빛, 그리고 잎사귀들이 서로 부딪치며 만들어 내는 소리이다. 밖에서 보면 대나무숲은 고요히
서 있는 것처럼 보이지만, 그 내부는 끊임없이 흔들리고 있다. 잎과 줄기 사이에는 거의 보이
지 않는 미세한 떨림이 존재하며, 나는 그 떨림을 점으로 기록한다.
작은 점들은 단순한 형태가 아니라 빛이 흔들리는 순간의 기록이다. 점은 바람의 결이고 호흡
의 리듬이며 숲이 내는 보이지 않는 진동이다. 점을 찍으며 숲이 만들어지고, 숲을 그리며 다
시 점으로 돌아간다. 숲은 수많은 개별 존재의 집합이며 하나의 점 또한 하나의 세계이다.
이번 전시에서는 작품과 함께 유리 캐비닛 속 작은 암석들이 놓인다. 암석은 움직이지 않는
다. 그것은 응축된 시간이며 침묵의 덩어리로서 수천 년의 시간을 품고 있다. 반면 화면 위의
점들은 끊임없이 떨리고 있다. 빛을 받을 때마다 그 떨림은 다시 살아난다. 돌이 축적된 시간
을 간직하고 있다면, 점은 순간의 호흡을 품고 있다.
이 전시는 정지된 시간과 흔들리는 순간, 무게와 가벼움, 물질과 비물질 사이의 긴장을 보여
준다. 움직이지 않는 돌과 진동하는 점들은 서로 마주 서 있으며 고요와 움직임 사이의 균형
을 이루고 있다.
어둠 속에서 우리는 빛을 더욱 또렷하게 인식한다.
그리고 그 빛은 소리처럼 공간을 채운다.
