News: Meteorite fall in the area of Dachau near Munich!!!

Background: on Saturday, 27 January 2024, around 5.30 pm, a fireball could be observed in large parts of Central Europe, especially in the region around Munich.

The fireball may have led to a meteorite fall in the Dachau area north of Munich, see also media and press.

Please bring your possible meteorite finds to the Mineralogical State Collection for examination at any time!

In any case, please inform us in advance by email or telephone to arrange an appointment!

You can also – by appointment only – hand in your find at the cash desk during normal opening hours.

Please do not hand in any finds without making an appointment! It is also not possible to inspect finds immediately and/or only briefly, the finds must be deposited with us.

Ownership and property rights will of course be safeguarded by us.

Please note the following information, we need a number of details from you, otherwise it is not possible to process your possible meteorite find scientifically:

  1. Your name, address and contact information.
  2. Exact location of the find and please also send us pictures of the find at the place of discovery (as exact documentation as possible), if necessary geographical coordinates
  3. Time of discovery
  4. Pictures and documentation of your find, preferably also in advance by email
  5. Important for us – please inform us promptly and bring your find to us promptly – this is necessary for scientific reasons
  6. Important: please do not modify your find in any way, for example by grinding or sawing etc.
  7. Especially important: please do not use a magnet under any circumstances!!!
  8. Please do not clean, wash or clean in any way!
  9. Please do not touch with your hands or fingers, preferably use a woollen glove!
  10. Please wrap your find in aluminium foil, no plastic or synthetic material!
  11. Please also tell us about any other observations you may have made in connection with the fireball or your finds!
  12. We also ask for your understanding that the scientific processing takes a certain amount of time. Please refrain from contacting us, we have your contact details and will get back to you as soon as possible, thank you.
